CHROMA: COLOUR AS RESEARCH

What does colour do to us?

Colour captures our attention, evokes memories and emotions, and can change the way we look at the world. We use colour every day, yet rarely stop to consciously consider its presence. Chroma: Colour as Research, at Kunstlievend Genootschap Pictura, invites visitors to do exactly that.

I am very pleased and honoured to have been invited by Pictura to curate and bring together this exhibition. Chroma grew from my own long-standing fascination with colour and from the desire to explore the many ways in which artists engage with it — not simply as a visual element, but as a subject of research, perception and experience.

Ten artists explore, throughout Pictura’s different spaces, what colour can mean and how it behaves. At times, colour is overwhelming and sensory; at others, subtle and contemplative. Colour can emerge from nature, shift with the light, speak its own language, or tell us something about the world around us. The exhibition also explores the relationship between colour and sound, as well as the possible influence of colour on our wellbeing.

In Chroma, colour becomes more than something we simply see. It becomes a way of looking, experiencing and asking questions. The exhibition reveals the surprising versatility of colour and its close connection to culture, our surroundings and the way we perceive the world. Bringing visual art, science and social questions into dialogue, Chroma offers a moment to slow down in a world saturated with images.

PUBLIC PROGRAMME

The exhibition is accompanied by an extensive public programme. Visitors can hear scientists and artists speak about colour perception and the cultural history of colour, explore the role of colour in architecture and garden design, take part in a colour theory workshop, and watch and discuss Derek Jarman’s film Blue.

A special evening of music will also take place, with musicians from Zeevonk Records creating and performing music inspired by the artworks in the exhibition.

Chroma is therefore not simply an exhibition to look at, but an invitation to experience colour anew — for anyone curious about art, science, music, or simply the world around us.
