Showcase IV: the plant-based, biological side of art

Under the name Showcase, ACEC is hosting a series of exhibitions on the combination of art, greenery and landscape. This is one of the substantive pillars of art venue ACEC. During these exhibitions ‘The Canteen Conversation’ is also held, for and by artists, gardeners and landscape architects. Showcase also connects  with ACEC’s role as an organizer for art commissions in public spaces.

Showcase IV shows a plant-based, organic side of art. Esther Hoogendijk actually works with living greenery, growth and decay. The combination of glass, concrete, candy cane pink and fresh minty tones with plant greens, gives the work a wonderfully clean and clinical look. Ronald Zuurmond’s paintings, where plant forms carefully grow out of pasty layers of oil paint, seem to refer more to a mental, psychological space. Liesbeth Piena uses the graphic rhythm of plant leaves, and the atmospheric effect of layers of paint, beautifully capturing the vibrancy of living nature. Gabriëlle Kroese’s work consists of floral photography, provided with dot-like, rhythmically applied color swatches, which seem to combine an artistic sense of color with scientific analysis and arrangement.
Iris Bouwmeester creates complex biomorphic sculptures, which look like shells, fungi, and mushrooms . The work is generated from repeating traces of growth, clearly visible in the surface skin, and betrays the artist’s fascination with growth processes in nature.
